Hezbollah claims first attack on Israel after truce

For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to respond "firmly" to Hezbollah's attack.

The Israeli Army confirmed on Monday (02.12.2024) the launching by the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah of two projectiles against northern Israel, the first incident of this type since the ceasefire between the two came into effect on November 27.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, without providing details, and indicated that it was directed against an Israeli position in Ruwaisat al Alam, in the disputed border area of Kfar Chuba.

The Shiite movement, considered terrorist by the European Union and various countries, defended this act as an "initial warning defensive response", after what it described as repeated violations of the clauses of the ceasefire agreement by Israel.

The unfulfilled points

According to the group, the breaches of the truce include "firing on civilians and airstrikes in various parts of Lebanon that resulted in the death of citizens and injuries to others," while Hezbollah also denounced "the continued violation of Lebanese airspace" by Israeli fighter jets.

According to the Israeli army, the two projectiles fell in unpopulated areas near Mount Dov, without causing any casualties. The Israeli media outlet Haaretz said that both projectiles were mortars.

Since the truce came into effect, both sides have accused each other of violating it, although it remains in force and attacks in urban spaces have been drastically reduced.

Israeli soldiers demand withdrawal

This morning, the speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, accused Israel of violating the ceasefire on at least 54 occasions, and asked the committee in charge of supervising the implementation of the truce to force Israeli soldiers to leave the country.

The Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, defended for his part that Israel is simply "enforcing" the agreement, which provides for the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters north of the Litani River and the gradual exit of Israeli troops from Lebanon within 60 days.

Both yesterday and today, the Israeli Army carried out several attacks in Lebanon, according to a military statement, attacking military vehicles near an alleged missile factory in the eastern Bekaa Valley.

Israel also said it was aware of the death of a member of the Lebanese security forces in one of its attacks in the south, assuring that the incident "is under investigation."

Israel vows to respond "firmly"

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that Israel would respond "firmly" to the launching of two projectiles claimed today by the Lebanese Shiite group.

"Hezbollah's fire (...) constitutes a serious violation of the ceasefire, and Israel will respond firmly. We are determined to continue to apply the ceasefire and to respond to any violation by Hezbollah, whether minor or serious," Netanyahu said in a message sent by his office.
