The Israeli army said on Friday (29.11.2024) that it had bombed a Hezbollah rocket launcher in southern Lebanon, two days after the start of a truce with the pro-Iranian Islamist movement.

"Recently, terrorist activities and the movement of a Hezbollah portable rocket launcher were detected in southern Lebanon. The threat was thwarted by an attack (by the Israeli air force)," the army said in a statement published with a video showing a bombing of a slowly moving truck.

The truce, which came into effect on Wednesday, was agreed after 13 months of cross-border clashes and two months of open war between Israel and Hezbollah. The conflict caused massive population displacement in both Lebanon and Israel.

At least 3,961 people have died in Lebanon since October 2023 as a result of the conflict, most of them in recent weeks, and 16,520 have been injured, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Israel, for its part, reported the deaths of 82 soldiers and 47 civilians.

Hezbollah claims 'great victory', vows to implement ceasefire

Hezbollah leader Naim Qasem said on Friday in his first speech since the ceasefire with Israel came into effect in Lebanon that the Islamist movement had achieved "a great victory."

"We won because we prevented the enemy from destroying Hezbollah and annihilating or weakening the resistance," he said in a pre-recorded speech.

He also pledged to cooperate with the Lebanese army in implementing the ceasefire agreement with Israel, which provides for Israeli troops and those of the Islamist militia to withdraw from southern Lebanon.

"There will be high-level coordination between the resistance and the Lebanese army to implement the terms of the agreement," said Qasem. "Let no one bet on problems or conflicts" with the army, he added.
