Canada mulls tariffs on US products

The Canadian government is considering implementing this measure in response to the announcement by the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, that he intends to increase taxes on products from Mexico and Canada.

Canada is considering imposing additional tariffs on some US products if the future president of the United States, Donald Trump, follows through on his threat to raise taxes on Canadian products, a government source said on Friday (29.11.2024).

Ottawa is considering all scenarios and in particular the possibility of responding by increasing customs duties, a government source explained to AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that the work of identifying these products has already begun.

On Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hinted at the press that he has no doubts about Trump's intention to carry out his threat to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian products when he comes to power on January 20.

Trump's announcement this week also reached Mexico, the other partner in the T-MEC, the North American free trade agreement.

"When Donald Trump makes these statements, he intends to execute them," Trudeau told reporters in the province of Ile-du-Prince-Edouard (Prince Edward Island, northeast).

"There is no doubt," he added, while some consider Trump's statement to be above all a negotiating tactic.

Blow to Trudeau

The announcement is another blow to Trudeau, who is up for re-election in a few months. The Liberal prime minister is far behind in the polls, overtaken by his conservative opponent, Pierre Poilievre.

By 2023, more than three-quarters of Canadian exports, worth some US$423 billion, went to the United States.

During Trump's first term (2017-2021), the United States applied tariffs of 25% on steel imports and 10% on aluminum imports, to which Ottawa responded with customs duties in reciprocity.

At the time, Canada targeted specific products seeking a political rather than economic impact. Thus, orange juice from Florida or bourbon from Kentucky were affected, two states led by Republicans like Trump.
